Open Letter to the State Chapters of Political Parties in Kwara State

Call for Affordable Nomination Form Fees and Fair Primary Elections

We, the Justice Crusaders Organisation, dedicated to promoting fairness and integrity in political processes, write to express our concerns regarding the forthcoming chairmanship and councillorship elections within the various political parties in Kwara State, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Accord Party, Youth Development Party, and Labour Party.

To uphold democratic values, it is essential to create an environment where all qualified individuals, regardless of their financial status, can participate in the political process. High fees for nomination forms create significant barriers, excluding capable and passionate candidates who lack substantial financial resources. This practice inadvertently promotes money politics and marginalizes a large segment of the populace, undermining the democratic principles we all cherish.

We stress the importance of conducting credible primary elections that genuinely reflect the will of party members. While consensus candidates may seem convenient, they risk undermining democratic principles. Selecting candidates through consensus is akin to appointing a caretaker committee and does not truly reflect members' preferences.

In light of these concerns, we respectfully urge the leadership of all political parties in Kwara State to consider the following actions before finalizing and announcing the fees for nomination forms:

1. Set Affordable Fees: Ensure nomination fees are accessible to all, encouraging broader participation.

2. Promote Fair Primary Elections: Implement transparent and equitable primary processes.

3. Support Youth and Women: Encourage and support the participation of youth and women in the primary elections by providing financial assistance, mentorship programs, and creating policies that promote gender equality and youth inclusion in the political arena.

Furthermore, we compel all parties to communicate these concerns and recommendations to their respective local chapters. It is crucial that this matter receives attention at both the local and state levels to ensure comprehensive and effective reforms.

Thank you for your attention to these important matters.
